Past WACH Interns

The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg welcomes its new summer interns!

Students will work together to organize the 2017 International Young Leaders Conference & Career Fair and immerse themselves in international affairs, meeting with experts, debating issues and learning life skills for the workplace and beyond.  We particularly welcome students who have participated in our Global Scholars, Academic WorldQuest and International Poetry & Storytelling Competition.

Our College Interns

Kelsey Bechtel of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania is a junior at the University of Virginia, where she is studying Foreign Affairs and Public Policy. Kelsey has a passion for travel and plans to study abroad next spring to further explore her interests in foreign affairs. Upon graduation, Kelsey hopes to pursue a career in public service and work for a non-profit focusing on global development and international peace.


Neal Rose of Dauphin, Pennsylvania, is a senior at Lebanon Valley College, where he is studying Global Studies, Spanish, and Criminal Justice. Neal has spent a semester in Valladolid, Spain, where he conducted research about the relationship of the United States and Spain during the Spanish Civil War until the end of the Cold War. He is passionate about international relations and the global impact of said relations. Neal will finish his degree at Lebanon Valley in the Spring of next year.

Claudia Powers of Carlisle, Pennsylvania is a Junior at Niagara University, where she is studying International Management and the Middle East. Claudia has an interest in Middle Eastern affairs and plans to study abroad in the upcoming year. Upon her graduation, Claudia hopes to pursue a career in special intelligence with the United States Government.


Thomas Connell of Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a junior at Dickinson College, where he is studying International Studies with a concentration in the Middle East. Thomas also studies Arabic and plans on going abroad to the Middle East this upcoming spring. Upon graduation, Thomas plans on either teaching English abroad or working for a non-profit focusing on issues facing the Middle East, before going on to grad school.

Kariem Morssy of Stroudsburg. Kariem is a Junior Political Science student with a concentration on Global Politics at Penn State Harrisburg. Kariem Is fluent in Arabic and plans on entering the Peace Corps after graduation as a community development volunteer.


Xavira Hussein is originally from Jersey City, NJ and currently attends Penn State as a Senior. She is a political science major and plans to attend law school in Fall of 2018. She is Fluent in Dutch and is currently working towards becoming fluent in German and Arabic. She loves to travel and learning new cultures and languages.


Hannah Sorenson of Etters, Pennsylvania is a senior at Lebanon Valley College, where she is pursuing a Politics major with a Law and Society Minor. She recently spent four weeks studying abroad in Maastricht, The Netherlands where she studied human rights and intercultural communications. Hannah will be completing her degree at Lebanon Valley College in the spring of 2018, and hopes to pursue a career in public administration or policy.


Our High School Interns


Rohan Lala of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania is a sophomore at Cumberland Valley, where he is studying a plethora of general education course, but doubling up on sciences. Rohan has a passion for soccer and science. After high school, he plans to go to a university to study chemistry.


Niki Marathe is from Mechanicsburg, PA and goes to Cumberland Valley High School, where she will be a senior this fall. She hopes to go to college and eventually become a doctor someday. She is a part of various academic clubs at school, including Key Club and the National Honor Society. In her free time, she enjoys reading, listening to music and traveling to new places.


Jesse Lin of Hershey, PA is a junior at Milton Hershey School, located in Hershey, PA. He will be studying abroad in Reims, France for his junior year through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. After completing his year abroad, he is interested in traveling more and pursuing his French studies as well as International Relations.


Asna Rizwan of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is a junior at Central Dauphin High School. Upon graduation, she plans to study Chemistry. She plays volleyball and tennis and loves to read in her free time. She’s involved in Youth & Government PA with the East Shore YMCA and is a member of the National Honors Society. She loves traveling and learning new languages.


Briana Staulters is a student at Bishop McDevitt High School, and she is considering majoring in Political Science when she enters college. Briana is keenly interested in international affairs and is focusing on the history and current developments in the countries of Eastern Europe.
