Along Central Asia’s Silk Road
With WACH Council President Dr. Joyce Davis
About this Trip
Colorful mosques and madrassahs, lively bazaars, world-renowned artisans, UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites, stunning desert vistas; this is the world we enter on our tour along the ancient Silk Road through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. We begin in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and visit the Burana Tower, an 11th century Silk Road monument. We then continue to Almaty, the largest city and former capital of Kazakhstan, for a glimpse of Kazakh culture, including a visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral and a falconry demonstration. From there, we fly to the Uzbek capital of Tashkent. Here, we tour the city and visit the archives to view the oldest known example of the Quran. Next, stop in the Silk Road gem of Khiva and tour the old walled city, visit a handicraft workshop, and enjoy a folklore performance at a lakeside yurt camp. Cross the desert by train to Bukhara and be immersed in the 140 architectural monuments and visit the home of a Sufi miniaturist to learn about his craft and enjoy a home-hosted meal. Continue by train to Samarkand and visit the tomb of Tamerlane. Marvel at Registan Square, perhaps the most spectacular example of Central Asian Islamic architecture. This tour will sell out quickly!
