Joe Hewitt, Vice President of the U.S. Institute of Peace, is the keynote speaker for the 2022 International Peace Symposium from 10:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022 at Elizabethtown College.

Vice President, Policy, Learning and Strategy at USIP
Dr. Joseph Hewitt is the vice president for Policy, Learning and Strategy. He leads USIP's efforts to capture learning from the Institute's program activities and apply it for more effective policy engagement and strategy formation. He brings more than twenty years of experience working to apply rigorous analyses of conflict dynamics to strengthen tools for conflict assessment, improve the design of peacebuilding programs and refine systems for program monitoring and evaluation.

Assistant Professor of History at Lebanon Valley College
Can Bahadır Yüce is an Assistant Professor of History at Lebanon Valley College. He teaches courses on world history, global studies, and the modern Middle East. Dr. Yuce worked as a journalist in Turkey for several years and edited the book review of Zaman newspaper. Zaman was seized and shut down by the Turkish government in 2016. In his remarks, Dr. Yuce will talk about the rise and future of authoritarianism in Turkey.

Associate Professor of Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies & Francophone & Middle Eastern Studies at Dickinson College
Dr. Rebeiz received her doctorate in Francophone Studies from Florida State University in 2012. She has a master’s degree in International Law and Human Rights from Université de Rouen in France, and a bachelor’s degree in private law from Saint Joseph University in Lebanon. Dr. Rebeiz’ teaching and research focus on the intersectionality of law, gender, sexuality, oral history, and trauma in the context of armed conflicts with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa. Her book "Gendering Civil War. Francophone Women’s Writing in Lebanon" was published by Edinburgh University Press (March 2022). Several of her articles appeared in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Currently, She is working on her second book project on war crimes and terrorism in Lebanon during the civil war (1975-1991). She is also finishing her second doctorate in International Law (SJD) at Penn State Dickinson Law.
