Meet our 2013 Summer Interns

Exploring the World

The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg welcomes the following high school and college interns this summer:

Ann-Queen Sedhom is a junior at Cumberland Valley High School. She’s 100% Egyptian and very outgoing, easy to talk to and a great leader and public speaker.

 
 
 
Ashley Rice is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a Political Science major and has taken courses focusing on International Studies and Criminal Justice. Some of her interests include traveling, reading, writing and music. Her ultimate goal would be to land a job with the FBI.


 
 Cole Goodman is a sophomore at Elizabethtown College. He enjoys politics and international affairs. His future goal is to become a  public servant and serve as a Congressman, Senator, and possibly Governor. Goodman enjoys public speaking, working on political campaigns and meeting new people.


Courtney Thurston is a sophomore at Connections Academy and passionate about engineering, economics, and education. Thurston advocates for a project-based learning and is a big fan of chocolate.  “I don’t know, but I can find out”

Kai Williams is a Sophomore at Xavier University of Louisiana. Her major is biology pre-med. She hopes to become a  dermatologist. Williams is interested in learning about other cultures and international health issues.  She wants to specialize in epidemics and skin problems.

 

 
Kewan Bullock is a 4th-year MBA Candidate at Florida A&M University. He is an analytical and critical thinker, problem solver, aspiring entrepreneur and philanthropist. He’s very passionate about the arts, especially music, poetry, and film.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
LaTanya Gilbert is a senior at Central Penn College. Gilbert’s major is Corporate Communications and her interest is public relations/marketing. She is from Elizabeth, NJ and is the oldest of six children. Her goal is to own a public relations firm, while giving back to her community. Her hobbies include reading, writing and  spending time with her family and friends.
 
 
 
Lily Hess is in 11th grade in Cumberland Valley Highschool. She hopes to eventually join the Foreign Service. She enjoys reading, drawing, and traveling.

William Powell & Holly Shorrock
Holly Shorrock is finishing a master’s degree in international relations and plans to pursue a PhD.  She is Program Coordinator for the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg. Her areas of interest are Algeria, other countries of North Africa and all things pertaining to the Middle East. She excels at finding panelists to staff events and enjoys the experience she has gained with WACH.
 
William Powell is a graduate student at Penn State Harrisburg. His interest is U.S. national security, and he is helping WACH organize a forum series at Dickinson College on “Hidden Hotspots,” around the world.
 

Jaime Johnsen is a senior at Penn State Harrisburg studying Psychology who has been an Intern/Programing associate for the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg for over 4 months now.  Johnsen says she is learning a great deal of information regarding current world events and issues, from global perspectives to local involvement. The reward is priceless and that this wonderful organization to be a part of. She looks forward to working with all of the eager students in the internship programs. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Oksana Levadnaya holds a Master’s of Arts degree in Linguistics from St.Petersburg State University and has previously worked in international education both as an educational consultant for a private firm and as Education USA adviser with the non-profit American Councils for International Education. She has experience studying and working in the U.S. through Reed College’s Russian Language Scholar program in Portland, Oregon.

LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD!

International economic, political and social subjects that are current and provocative will also be discussed with the use of the Great Decisions breifing book. produced by the Foreign Policy Association.  The Great Decisions program highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. Great Decisions provides background information, current data and policy options for each issue and serves as the focal text for discussion groups.

WACHARRISBURG offers flexible schedules so that students can meet outside obligations. While these internship opportunities are unpaid, the Council will work with your school to provide school credit where applicable.
